THE TWO TERMS CUSTOMERS SEE MOST

Slab or Prehung? You Do Not Have to Guess.

These names describe what comes with the product—not the quality of the door. The condition of your existing opening determines which option may make sense.

SLAB DOOR

The door panel by itself.

A slab does not normally include a new jamb, threshold or casing. It can be a good option only when the existing frame is sound, compatible and worth keeping.

  • Keeps the existing frame when conditions allow
  • Hinges and hardware must be positioned accurately
  • Old openings are not always square or standard
PREHUNG DOOR

The door already mounted in a new jamb.

A prehung unit replaces more of the opening and is often used when the existing jamb is damaged, incompatible or part of a complete exterior-door replacement.

  • Includes the door and a new jamb assembly
  • Exterior units may include a threshold and weather seal
  • Trim, wall depth and opening conditions still matter
Still not sure? Choose “Help Me Decide” above and send one photo with the door open so the jamb, hinges and threshold are visible. Use the Project Finder
DOOR TYPES WE INSTALL AND REPLACE

One Service, Different Openings and Requirements.

The correct installation depends on whether the project uses the existing jamb, replaces the complete unit or changes the opening.

WHAT PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION INVOLVES

More Than Hanging a Door and Adding Screws.

A door may look correct and still rub, swing open, leak air or miss the latch. The opening and the complete system matter.

  • Confirm opening measurements, handing and swing direction
  • Review slab, prehung unit and jamb compatibility
  • Inspect accessible frame, wall and threshold conditions
  • Set the unit level, plumb and square with consistent gaps
  • Align hinges, latch, deadbolt, handles and other hardware
  • Address casing, trim, weatherstripping, sweep and seal
  • Test closing, latching, locking and final operation
  • Clean the immediate work area and complete a walkthrough

COMMON QUESTIONS

Answers Before You Order the Door.

Do you install both interior and exterior doors?

Yes. Rufino Carpentry installs and replaces front, exterior and interior doors, including slab and prehung projects when the opening and scope are compatible.

Should I buy the door before requesting an estimate?

It is usually better to confirm measurements, handing, jamb depth and project type first. Text the product link if you have already selected a door.

Can you replace only the door slab?

Sometimes. The existing jamb must be in usable condition and compatible with the new slab. A complete prehung replacement may be the better option when the jamb, threshold or opening is damaged or incompatible.

What photos should I send?

Send the full door from both sides, the frame, threshold, top and side gaps, plus the product label or link when available.

Is the estimate free?

Estimates based on clear project photos and measurements are free. When an on-site consultation is needed, the $70 visit fee is credited toward the approved project.
